His Excellency János Áder
President of the Republic of Hungary
His Holiness Pope Francis sends cordial greetings to you and to all participating in the „Budapest Water Summit”, being held from 28 to 30 November 2016. He extends his prayerful best wishes as you gather leaders and experts from the public and private spheres in order to seek new paths of cooperation between governments, organizations and peoples in securing potable water for all people, as well as in protecting this precious resource. His Holiness encourages all presents to keep foremost in their deliberations the communities they most desire to benefit, and to recall that “access to safe drinkable water is a basic and universal human right, since it is essential to human survival and, as such, is a condition for the exercise of other human rights” (Laudato Si’, 30). In this way, the Summit will offer a further contribution to understanding the duty of Governments and communities to ensure that no people thirst or be denied the water necessary for the fulfilment of their lives; for water is not simply another product for commerce, but the precious and wonderful gift of God. With these sentiments, Pope Francis assures all of you of his prayers and invokes upon you the divine blessings of wisdom and strength.
